Myofascial Therapy
Myofascial therapy recognises that the body works as an integrated whole, and within that whole there are chains of muscle and fascia (connective tissue) which work together to influence what happens elsewhere in the chain and indeed, in other chains. If we look at the picture below from Thomas Myers book ‘Anatomy Trains’, which show 2 of the 14 myofascial lines, it will help clarify the facts.
Look at the superficial back line. The muscles in this chain do not act in an isolated way. All of them from the toes on the underside of the foot, via the back of the body to the top of the eyebrows are linked. Collagen runs through the muscle tissue and over bone meaning anything happening in one part of this chain will affect the remainder of the chain. In addition to this, it can be affected by other chains in the body too. If the lateral line shown in the picture on the right were tight down one side of the body, then the opposite lateral line would lengthen and the superficial back line on the opposite side would also lengthen slightly. This means compensations happening throughout the body to maintain normal movement. Over time, these compensations inevitably lead to pain or a breakdown of some kind.
If we understand this more complete and integrated view of the body, we can treat it far more effectively. Myofascial therapy with JP Active involves both hands on treatment and movement therapy as your body has the ability to gradually heal itself when given new intelligent movements. Depending upon your issue, it’s not uncommon for people to experience dramatic improvements with just a few sessions. Take a look at the videos below. Rose is a perfect example of someone with a severe condition (osteoarthritis in the knees) can be given significant relief from pain and massive improvements in mobility within a very short space of time. Cory in the second video was a longer term case having suffered a back injury and needing months of work.
The most common and successful treatments have been for relief from pain in the neck and shoulders (often causing headaches) due to desk work and work in the service industry, low back pain from a huge variety of causes, hip pain and knee pain. Understanding that the pain manifesting in one place may be caused by postural or movements patterns elsewhere in the body gives this approach a 90% success rate. If you don’t feel a difference after the first session, we’ll know this style of treatment isn’t for you. Luckily, that’s rare .
This approach in the hands of JP who is trained in postural and movement assessment, exercise prescription, functional training and has experience of helping everyone from cancer patients to elite athletes, is extremely powerful. Even if you don’t suffer from any specific issue but would like a ‘tune up’ you will be amazed at how good you feel afterwards – taller, lighter, even happier. Your body will always say thanks with a release of feelgood hormones when you feed it with intelligent and therapeutic information .
